Carthage International Festival celebrates Hedi Jouini’s timeless music

Tunis, Tunisiaonlinenews, July 23, 2009- It is often said that one year sometimes equals a hundred. In 2009 Tunisia is commemorating several centenary anniversaries including those of the poet Abou El Kacem El Chebbi and Ali Douagi, one of the country’s most popular story writers and satirists.

On July 25, which coincides with Tunisia’s celebration of the 52 nd anniversary of the Republic, the Carthage International Festival will pay a special tribute to one of the giants of Tunisian and Maghrebi popular music, Hedi Jouini.

The country’s traditional music orchestra, La Rachidia led by Zied Gharsa and his enchanted lute, will perform some of Hedi Jouini’s timeless masterpieces inspired from the country’s Andalusian heritage. Incidentally the event is highly symbolic as Jouini first joined the Rachidia at the tender age of 16.

Young talented singers such as Meherzia Touil, and Sofiene Zaidi will join the Rachidia in celebrating Jouini’s art by performing some of the masterpieces on his repertoire such as “Taht el zitouna fil lil” (under the olive tree at night), and many others which are still very much alive in the Tunisian musical memory.
