Zarzis celebrates 40 th edition of its annual sponge festival

Tunis, July 20, 2009- The picturesque sea side town of Zarzis, located in southeastern Tunisia, also known by its Roman name as Zita and Gerzis, is holding the 40th edition of its annual sponge festival.

The holding of festival which this year has reached its 40th edition, bears witness to the rich cultural, agricultural and economic heritage of Zarzis.

The festival which kicked off on Saturday, opened with a sea ballad illustrating sponge fishing techniques, a traditional activity in the region.

On the occasion of the opening of the event, which runs until July 21, Zarzis will also hold the 2nd exhibition of agricultural products and a concert realized by the popular performer Imen Cherif.

Several conferences are due to be held on the sidelines of this festival mainly on “youth and the information society” ,”the importance of heritage and memory in the tourist cultural enrichment “and ”the role of culture in the philosophy of change.”

As part of the festival, Musical concerts will be held such as with the participation of three artists, Asma Salim (Morocco), Mehdi Amin (Tunisia) and Deryassa Abdou (Algeria), as well as heritage nights. The 4 th Art Exhibit will feature a performance of a one man show by Lamine Nehdi.

Like every year, the festival will honor the best fisherman of the year, a football competition, traditional performances and a beauty contest.
