Tunis, November 2, 2008- “Teza” by the Ethiopian filmmaker Haile Gerima, won the “Golden Tanit” Award in the long feature film competition , at the 22 nd edition of the Carthage Film Festival.
The Award ceremony which took place on Saturday evening, ended in style a weeklong of film screenings, debates and press points. Mr Abderraouf Basti, the Tunisian Minister of Culture and Heritage Preserervation handed the Prize in person to Haile Gerima.
Chaired by the well-known Algerian writer, Yasmina Khadra, the Jury awarded “Teza” 6 prizes in all, including those of the best scenario, the best image, the best editing , the best music, as well as the best second male role . The “Silver Tanit” went to “Leila’s Birthday” by the Palestinian director Rachid Masharaoui, and the Bronze Tanit was awarded to a Tunisian movie, “Khamsa” by Karim Dridi.
In the short feature movie category, the “Golden Tanit” was given to “Dirty soap and clean hands” by the Egyptian director, Karim Fanous.
Last but not least, the “Honorary Prize” was awarded to the great actor from Burkina Faso, Sotigui Kouyate, for his whole career. Visibly moved, the actor and griot said: “A big thank you to Tunisia, where I could shine ,as this is the first country which has paid me tribute”.
