It’s soon action time for 22nd edition of Carthage Film Festival

Tunis, October 17, 2008- It is soon going to be action time for one of Tunisia’s major cultural events, and Africa’s oldest film festival.

The Carthage Film Festival (Journées Cinématographiques de Carthage), which is running into its 22 nd edition, will be officially launched on October 25, 2008 at the Tunis Municipal Theatre, the event will come to a close on November 1,2008.

During a press point given in Tunis on Thursday, the Director of the organizing committee, Mrs Dorra Bouchoucha announced the official program

Mrs Bouchoucha also announced the festival’s jury which is composed of personalities from the world of the arts and cinema. The jury includes Yasmina Khadhra, an Algerian success writer, Ezzat Alayli, an Egyptian actor, Rahmatou Keita, a filmmaker from Niger, Nouri Bouzid, a Tunisian filmmaker, Ismael Lo, a Senegalese singer, Emmanuelle Beart, the well known French actress, and Sandra Den Hammer, the Director of Amsterdam’s Cinema Museum.

The official 35 mm film competition will include some 19 movies, four by African directors and fifteen by Arab directors.

Also scheduled, is a short feature movie competition which will comprise 9 movies including 3 Tunisian movies and 3 African movies.

A video section will also be featured.

It was also announced that among the VIP’s invited for event are Khaled Nabaoui, Jean Claude Carriere, Nicole Garcia, Jeanne Moreau and Fredric Mitterrand.

In the “Panorama” section, the public will be able to see the latest Woody Allen, “Vicky Cristina Barcelona”, Zang Lu’s “Desert Dream”, Ken Loach’s “It’s a free world” and Brian de Palma’s “Redacted”. Films by filmmakers from 18 different nationalities will also be screened.

In addition to the many movies screened in 11 cinemas throughout the capital, the festival will also feature tributes to Youssef Chahine, Ousmene Sambene, Humbert Balsan and Ahmed Bahaeddine Attia.

Workshops will also be organised between academics and filmmakers, several parallel sections will showcase Turkish cinema, as well as Algeria’s budding cinematographic production. A special section dubbed “against forgetfulness”, will highlight the plight of the Palestinian people through 11 short documentaries.

36 years after its creation, the Carthage Film Festival remains one of the continent’s major cinema events, providing the public with a precious opportunity to watch the very best of what is produced in the world, as well as offering Arab and African filmmakers a possibility to shine by winning the much coveted first prize known as the “Tanit d’ Or”.

If the festival has long outgrown the reputation it gained in its early days, for being a “militant” Arab and African film festival, it has still retained its vigor and originality throughout all these years.
