Tunis, December 12, 2008- The oasis town of Tozeur, the cradle of Tunisia’s most celebrated poet, Abulkacem El Chebbi and the repository of a rich and vibrant culture, will celebrate the 30 th edition of its International Oasis Festival, an annual event which is gaining momentum.
Tozeur which boasts a 21 hole oasis golf course as well as an international airport and top of the range four and five star hotels, has retained its traditional charm which earned it its popularity as a top Saharan resort.
The festival will take place in different locations and will be officially launched on December 26. The closing ceremony is due on December 30.
With the final touches being brought to the preparation of the event, the city is living in a state of effervescence, awaiting D day when the festival is finally launched.
This year’s edition will witness the participation of several regional and international music groups from Russia, Italy, France, Libya and Japan and other countries , as well as scientific events and documentary films showing the region’s original handicrafts.
Festivities will also illustrate Tunisian folklore and choreographies will combine local cultural heritage and the traditions of the South, as well as those of other regions.
A seminar held to this effect, will showcase the region’s musical heritage. It will also shed light on the cuisine, clothing as well as the customs and mores of the South.
Poetry readings, and an international conference on “the situation and perspectives of the ancient oases” will also take place during the festival.
The traditional parades and street performances are also planned adding to the festival’s popular and vernacular flavor.
The Tunisian south is best visited at this time of the year; moreover December will enable visitors to discover both the Douz International Festival which runs from December 25 to 28, 2008 and the Tozeur Oasis Festival. If both festivals, celebrate in common desert culture, their specificities are worth discovering separately.
To top it all, this year’s date season, and especially the much celebrated “Deglet Ennour”, is truly exceptional. To sample without moderation and preferably under the oasis’ lush palm groves.
