Hammamet International Festival kicks off

Tunis, July 8, 2009- The 2009 Hammamet International Festival which kicked off on July 7, will run till August 18. The festival’s 45 th edition will feature as is now customary, both dramatic performances and a world music festival.

From July 7 to 16, the festival will be dedicated to dramatic performances. Tunisian theatre which this year commemorate the 100 th anniversary of its existence will pay tribute to Ali Douagi, one the early, pioneering figures of Tunisian theatre.

Theatre companies from Tunisia, the United States, Denmark, Morocco and the Congo will take part in the event, which will unfold at the Hammamet open air theatre, within the premises of the Hammamet International Cultural Centre.

One of the festival’s highlights will be the conference given by the Danish, world renowned stage director, Eugenio Barba, who incidentally will also present his work “Ode to Progress”.

The world music festival will then take over from July 17 to August 18 and will feature some 31 concerts, from performers and groups of 15 countries. A roster of stars from all musical influences and origins will take part in the event including Tunisia’s Lotfi Bouchnak, Riadh El Fehri and Zohra Lajnef, but also Australia’s Tina Arena, Canada’s Justin Nozuka, France’s I Muvrini, and Serbia’s Emir Kusturica & the No Smoking orchestra.

To note that Chile’s mythic group “Quilapayun” will make their comeback on the Hamamet festival’s scene following a thirty year absence.

Some great moments ahead for one of Tunisia’s most awaited cultural events of the summer.
